IWAO SUMI(墨）

The IWAO SUMI (Sumi Black) model builds upon the reliability of a field watch while enveloping it in the tightened presence of a deep, dark-toned dial. At its center lies a boldly executed “rock surface” texture, capturing the rugged dimensionality and natural force of stone with striking clarity. This expressive surface defines the spirit behind the series name IWAO, forming the conceptual core of the model. A calm satin finish along the outer ring establishes a two-layer structure where roughness and stillness coexist.

The dial layout alternates Arabic numerals with diamond-cut bar indexes, each reflecting light with sharp precision. Against the near-black background, their brilliance stands out vividly, emphasizing the contrast between polished elements and the raw texture beneath. The arched logo plate at 12 o’clock blends naturally into the dial’s three-dimensional architecture, anchoring the overall composition with visual balance.

A sloped minute track surrounds the exterior, guiding the eye inward. Paired with an ultra-low rehaut, it creates a highly condensed visual effect that makes the sapphire crystal appear remarkably close to the dial surface. A thin polished ring placed between the flat dial and the sloped ring adds a subtle glimmer, bringing refined nuance into the world of deep sumi black.

The seconds hand shares the same silver tone as the hour and minute hands, creating a unified expression across the handset. The tip of the seconds hand, which carries luminous material, is shaped after the great roof of Asakusa’s Kaminarimon gate—its reddish tone evoking the iconic vermillion pillars that stand at the landmark’s entrance. The slim baton hour and minute hands are filled with luminous material that emits a vivid blue glow in darkness, as does the inverted-triangle marker at 12 o’clock, ensuring immediate orientation in low-light environments.

The contrast between the diamond-cut indexes and the dark sumi dial enhances the sense of depth when light strikes, enriching the model’s quiet yet disciplined atmosphere.

Sized at 38mm in diameter, 9.5mm in thickness, and 46mm lug-to-lug, the case offers an ideal balance of versatility and refinement. The alternating brushed and polished finishing harmonizes with the strength of the rock-textured dial, producing a calm, confident presence on the wrist.
